LIBERTY ROAD

Liberty Road starts in Frederick, Maryland and ends in Baltimore City. I grew up on this road, in a farmhouse built in 1775 by my ancestors, and live less than 7 miles from its end. The people, structures, and landscape between these two places hold evidence of my family’s land ownership, slave holding, economic displacement, personal memories and erasure. In photographing along Liberty Road I am making a parallel journey into the archive of family documents dating back to the 1700s, archaeological artifacts excavated in the 1980s, personal objects, and research related to the housing development that sits on the 300 acre former farm.

Using black and white film and a single camera I photographed my wife everyday for all of 2016 exploring her role as a wife, a  mother, a business owner, an artist, and a friend. Here is a selection from each month from among the 366 photos (2016 was a leap).
